Microsoft WinHelp Files, or Windows Help Files, were used by Microsoft's Windows operating system as a proprietary format for displaying online help files. First introduced in 1990 with Windows 3.0, a WinHelp file could be displayed using the Microsoft Help browser.
This file format was deprecated in Windows Vista in favor of better formats such as the Microsoft Compiled HTML Help format (CHM), which provides many advantages over “.HLP” files. In response to user requests, Microsoft released the Microsoft Help browser program as a downloadable utility a few years later, allowing users to continue opening WinHelp files in succeeding operating system versions.
