Raster Image Files, also known as a Raster Graphic Files or bitmap images, are used to store data in the form of a dot matrix structure to represent an image. Simply put, it is a rectangular grid of pixels with each pixel representing an individual color. It is one of the most common file formats for storing image data, and are commonly used for website graphics, digital photos, and GIS applications.
There are two types of file formats that are used to store image data: raster and vector. Raster uses a pixel-based approach and stores data captured by cameras and scanners, while vector is used to store precise measurements and details that are required in engineering, 3D modeling, etc.
