Plugin Files, also known as add-ons or extensions, are used to add extra functionality to programs. Plugins are used to store all the necessary functionality and settings for the plugin to be directly installed/connected to the program. The plugins can also be made by third-party developers.
Several popular software programs allow their functionality to be enhanced through third-party software development, and many software titles maintain marketplaces for such plugins. Software like Google's Chrome browser (Chrome's Web Store) and WordPress have thousands of extensions available online for download (free and paid).
